More intervals, more blisters, and overtaking Lance Armstrong

Last night I dreamt that I not only finished the half marathon, but I WON it. And this momentous win included overtaking a flagging Lance Armstrong in the final 200m (can you guess what I've been watching for the last three weeks?!)

So in a bid to make sure this happens, I hit the downs again for some interval training tonight. For these Monday night sessions I go straight from work and park up on the downs, so I get changed in the office toilets. This normally involves coming back out into the office to grab the rest of my stuff, when I get some funny looks for my change of dress. A couple of weeks ago one of my colleagues was giving a little speech on the 40th anniversary of his first day at the Bristol Evening Post, and he mentioned seeing me the night before leaving work in my running kit. "You'd never have seen that 40 years ago," he said. "But you might have seen us running to the pub at about 10am."

The intervals went well, apart from some cramp in my foot when I was doing some warm up skipping - never normally happens. Last week I also had my first stitch for months and months and didn't really know what to do - any tips on stitch management? I've always either tried to run through it while bent awkwardly to one side or stopped altogether.

I felt much faster this week, and I think I was a bit but looking at the stats when I got back and uploaded the data from my watch, it only comes up as a couple of seconds faster per km - I was hoping for dramatic changes! I've also reached the stage where for some reason I am getting new blisters on my toes after every run - nothing too debilitating but they'll be glad I think when the half marathon is over. Now's not the time to be getting bigger shoes, but I do wonder why it's suddenly happening - are my feet bigger? Is it the heat? Hmm....

  1. Whenever I get a stitch I always try to manage it by breathing deeply through the nose and out the mouth - there is no scientific backup but it works for me!!!
